Obverse description Central field occupied by the quartered royal shield of Spain, displaying alternately the castles of Castile and the lions of León in the four quarters, all within a plain border. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. A partial circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, with the denomination numeral VIII and portions of the king's titles visible in the field. The flan, typical of cob coinage, is irregular in shape, and the die impression is boldly struck at centre with the design details well rendered despite the crude planchet.
