| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the quartered royal shield of Spain, displaying alternately the castles of Castile and the lions of León in the four quarters, all within a plain border. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. A partial circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, with the denomination numeral VIII and portions of the king's titles visible in the field. The flan, typical of cob coinage, is irregular in shape, and the die impression is boldly struck at centre with the design details well rendered despite the crude planchet. |

| Reverse description | Two crowned Pillars of Hercules, representing the Old and New Worlds, rise from stylised waves rendered as undulating horizontal lines in the lower field. Between the pillars, the motto PLVS SVL TRA is inscribed in three lines, with the mint mark NR (Nuevo Reino, Santa Fe de Bogotá) below. The date 1721 appears twice in the surrounding circular legend, which also carries the royal title HISPANIARVM REX. The whole composition is enclosed within a beaded or rope inner border, characteristic of the Nueva Granada cob series. |
