| Obverse description | Central field bears the quartered Royal Arms of Habsburg Spain within a pointed shield: the first and fourth quarters display the castles of Castile, and the second and third quarters the lions of León, with the pomegranate of Granada at the base. The mint mark (Mo), assayer initial, and denomination numeral 8 appear in the field to the left and right of the shield. The surrounding legend, partially visible on this cob flan due to the irregular planchet, reads PHILLIPPVS III DEI GRATIA or PHILLIPPVS III DEI G followed by the date on dated issues. The design is typical of the macuquina (cob) style, struck by hand with crude but bold relief. |
