Felipe II authorized the Segovia mint's conversion to water-powered milling machinery in 1583 — making it the first mint in the Spanish empire to produce machine-struck coinage at scale. The equipment, imported from Germany, allowed Segovia to strike the first truly round, uniform silver coins in Spain, a direct response to widespread clipping fraud that had plagued hand-struck cobs for decades.
Cal#164 places this piece within the milled series, distinguishable from the cob-struck reales of the same reign by their regularity alone. Segovia's aqueduct provided the hydraulic power that no other Castilian mint could replicate until well into the following century.
