| Obverse lettering | PHILIPPVS D G HISPANIARVM VIII (Translation: Philip, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains, 8) |
| Reverse description | A bold plain cross with a plain shaft divides the field into four quarters, each containing alternating castles (Castile) and rampant lions (León), all set within an elaborate quadrilobe or octolobe frame with decorative lobed border. The date 1587 appears at the top of the field between the legend and the frame, with the assayer's initial flanking it. The surrounding Latin legend, reading ET INDIARVM REX, identifies the monarch as King of the Indies, separated by pellet stops and contained within a beaded outer border. |
