Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse displays the partially preserved design of the Spanish colonial host coin, identifiable as a milled 8 Reales of the portrait type. The crowned royal arms of Spain, flanked by the Pillars of Hercules, are visible in the central field, though heavily worn and partially obscured. Fragments of the surrounding circular legend remain legible around the periphery, and the date 1811 is discernible in the lower exergue. The overall surface exhibits significant wear and corrosion consistent with extended circulation and the countermarking process.

Aanvullende informatie

The ENSAIE countermark — struck by insurgent forces loyal to Miguel Hidalgo during the earliest phase of the Mexican War of Independence — was applied to existing Spanish colonial coinage to assert rebel monetary authority without the infrastructure to mint new coins. Morelos added his own countermark after Hidalgo's execution in 1811, continuing the practice as the insurgency reorganized under his command. Both marks on a single host coin indicate it passed through at least two distinct phases of rebel circulation, a relatively uncommon survival.
