The ENSAIE countermark — struck by insurgent forces loyal to Miguel Hidalgo during the earliest phase of the Mexican War of Independence — was applied to existing Spanish colonial coinage to assert rebel monetary authority without the infrastructure to mint new coins. Morelos added his own countermark after Hidalgo's execution in 1811, continuing the practice as the insurgency reorganized under his command. Both marks on a single host coin indicate it passed through at least two distinct phases of rebel circulation, a relatively uncommon survival.
