Carlos III never saw a coin struck in his name at Mexico City — the mint operated under viceregal authority, thousands of miles from Madrid, and the king himself died in 1788 before many of these pieces completed their journey into Atlantic trade. The 8 Reales of this type became the workhorse of Pacific commerce, accepted by weight across Canton markets where Spanish assay marks carried more credibility than any issuing monarch's portrait.
KM#106.2a specifically designates the assayer FM pairing — Francisco Arance Cobos and Manuel Asanza — whose initials place production firmly within the later years of this date range.
