Burma's postcolonial coinage was reorganized following independence from Britain in 1948, but the monetary system retained the pe as a subdivision — eight pe equaling one mu, with the kyat sitting above both. The 1952 issues were struck at the Royal Mint in London, a quietly ironic arrangement given that Burma had left the Commonwealth the same year it gained independence, in 1948.
