Obverse description Unadorned draped bust of Agustín de Iturbide (Emperor Agustín I of Mexico) facing right, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and truncation. The field is smooth and unadorned. A circular Philippine countermark — applied during the reign of Isabella II between 1834 and 1837 — is struck over the lower portion of the bust, partially obscuring the neck and truncation. The peripheral legend reads AUGUSTINUS • DEI • PROVIDENTIA •, with the mint mark Mo and the date 1822 positioned in the lower segment of the coin.

Reverse description A crowned eagle displayed with wings spread, perched upon a bundle of arrows, a sceptre, and other imperial regalia, all rendered in bold relief at the centre of the field. The eagle, embodying the Mexican Empire under Agustín I, faces left with its head turned to the viewer's right. A circular toothed border frames the inner field. The peripheral legend, reading MEX • I • IMPERATOR • CONSTITUT •, is interrupted at the upper left by the denomination indicator 8 • S • J • M •, denoting eight escudos and the assayers' initials. The reverse legend identifies Agustín I as Mexico's first Constitutional Emperor.
