The Lima mint's milled coinage of the 1750s was produced under the supervision of a French-trained die-cutter, and the technical quality of these Lima pieces was generally superior to their Mexico City counterparts during this period. Fernando VI's reign was brief — he died in 1759 after a prolonged mental collapse following the death of his wife — which compresses the entire production window for this type to roughly six years.
Assayer marks on Lima 8 escudos of this period are key to precise dating. The J mintmark belongs to José Zamudio, active through most of this window.
