The surrounding border carries a partial Latin legend, interrupted by the irregular edges of the hammered flan. The bold, deeply struck cross design is characteristic of the Spanish colonial and metropolitan gold escudo series of the seventeenth century. The reverse composition reflects the standard macuquina die design employed across multiple Spanish mints during the reign of Felipe IV. |
