Carlos III's monetary reforms of the 1760s pushed Lima toward the milled "cordoncillo" coinage that displaced the old macuquina cob coinage — a shift that restructured mint labor, tooling, and output across Spanish South America simultaneously. Lima's production during these specific years overlapped with the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories, which triggered significant capital redistribution across the viceroyalty as Jesuit-held estates were liquidated and their wealth moved through colonial financial channels.
KM#73 is known with assayer marks for JM (José Leandro Marchena), whose tenure at Lima produced measurable variation in planchet preparation across the run.
