Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi served as Archbishop of Salzburg from 1560 until his death in 1586, presiding over one of the wealthiest ecclesiastical territories in the Holy Roman Empire at a moment when the salt trade through Salzburg was generating revenues that rivaled secular princes. Multi-ducat presentation pieces of this type were not struck for circulation — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and ceremonial largesse, distributed to imperial officials and visiting dignitaries.
Fr#628 is among the rarer Salzburg multiples of the period. The .986 fineness is consistent with Rhenish gold ducat standards enforced across imperial minting ordinances of the mid-sixteenth century.
