Zürich's multi-ducat presentation pieces of this period were not struck for circulation but as diplomatic gifts and formal honoraria — the sort of thing a city council handed to visiting dignitaries or awarded to military commanders in lieu of a pension. Fr#477 is among the heavier gold multiples produced by the city, and the five-year span suggests these were struck to order rather than on a fixed annual schedule.
Zürich retained its own mint authority well into the eighteenth century, one of the few Swiss cantons that exercised that right with any regularity in large gold denominations.
