| Obverse description | Armored bust of Charles I of Gonzaga-Nevers, Duke of Mantua, facing right, wearing a high ruff collar and richly decorated cuirass with pauldrons, the hair flowing in Baroque style. The effigy is rendered in bold high relief characteristic of early seventeenth-century Italian medallic art. The encircling Latin legend reads CAROLVS I D G DVX MAN ET M F ETC, separated by pellets, running along the beaded inner border. The date 1628 appears in the lower exergue area beneath the bust truncation. |

| Reverse description | A radiant solar face depicted at center within a zodiacal band adorned with astrological and celestial symbols, the whole surrounded by a field of small stars. Below the central device, stylized clouds and a terrestrial globe or earth are depicted, evoking the Gonzaga dynastic impresa of the sun. The motto NEC RETROGRADIOR NEC DEVIO (I neither go back nor stray) encircles the design, affirming constancy and resolve in a characteristically Baroque emblematic composition. The entire device is enclosed within a beaded border. |
