Perth Mint launched its Lunar Series I in 1996, cycling through the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac in sequence and concluding with the Rooster in 2005 — the final year of the first complete series run. The selective gold plating technique used on these issues, applying 24-karat gilding to specific design elements over the fine silver substrate, was a deliberate appeal to East Asian collector markets where the combination of gold and silver carries particular cultural resonance.
At 155.5 grams, this is the five-ounce denomination of the 2005 Rooster release. The series would restart immediately in 2008 as Lunar Series II, with redesigned reverses throughout.
