Lübeck's notgeld output during the inflationary years attracted considerable local artistic investment, and the Vereinigung zur Kunstpflege — a cultural arts promotion society — was among the more unusual issuers: not a municipality, not a bank, but a private cultural body issuing scrip under emergency currency conditions. That a fine arts organization had both the standing and the practical need to issue circulating notes in 1921 says something pointed about how thoroughly the German monetary system had broken down.
Gröning's design credit is rare enough to be worth noting — most notgeld designers went unrecorded. The DeNG reference groups three closely related varieties under a single catalog entry, suggesting minor text or color differences between issues rather than distinct printings.
