Obverse description The left two-thirds of the note carries a letterpress vignette divided into two scenes: a larger upper scene shows a rural homestead with a tiled-roof house, trees, and a standing male figure in civilian dress, while a circular inset at lower left portrays a widow in mourning dress accompanied by a small child. The right panel, printed on a light guilloche ground, carries the issuer's title in bold Gothic type, a red serial number, the denomination numeral '75' in large blue type, and the place and date 'Bochum im Mai 1920', below which appear two manuscript signatures above the designation 'Der Vorstand'. A circular red overprint stamp is applied across the centre of the note.

Comments

The issuer here is not a bank or municipality but a welfare association — the Westphalian provincial association for war-disabled veterans and war widows, operating out of Bochum. In the chaotic small-change vacuum of the early Weimar years, organizations of this type were occasionally authorized to issue Notgeld, effectively printing their own fractional currency to facilitate day-to-day transactions their members could not otherwise manage.

That a veterans' welfare body was drawn into emergency currency issuance says something blunt about 1920 Germany: the state could not reliably supply coin, and the human wreckage of the war was still being administered by committees running on improvised paper.
