Pößneck's Goethe-themed Notgeld series was one of dozens issued by small Thuringian municipalities in 1921, capitalizing on the collector craze that had turned emergency currency into a de facto publishing industry. Towns competed openly for sales to philatelic and notaphilic collectors across Germany, and print runs were often sized for that market rather than genuine municipal need. Johannes Arndt in Jena was a reliable regional printer for this type of commission.
The series reference suffix "3a" indicates a paper or color variant within the ninth issue, a distinction that matters to completists chasing the full Pößneck run.
