The left panel contains a pen-and-ink vignette of a Pößneck church tower with the caption 'Aus: Urania.' above; the right panel carries a corresponding architectural vignette captioned 'Aussicht.' The large central panel is filled with a passage in Gothic blackletter script from Goethe's epic poem Hermann und Dorothea, Canto 9, printed in black ink on horizontal red-ruled lines. The denomination '75 Pf.' appears in bold red letterpress in the lower corners of the outer panels, and the title 'Goethe: Hermann und Dorothea: 9' runs across the top in a decorative blackletter banner. |

Pößneck's Goethe-themed Notgeld series was one of dozens issued by small Thuringian municipalities in 1921, capitalizing on the collector craze that had turned emergency currency into a de facto publishing industry. Towns competed openly for sales to philatelic and notaphilic collectors across Germany, and print runs were often sized for that market rather than genuine municipal need. Johannes Arndt in Jena was a reliable regional printer for this type of commission.
