| Opmerkingen |
Sternberg's 1922 Notgeld issue came at the height of Germany's small-change crisis, when municipal authorities across Mecklenburg were printing their own fractional notes simply to keep retail trade moving. The city had particular reason to assert its local identity in this format — Sternberg held a notoriously dark place in regional Jewish history, having been the site of a 1492 host desecration trial that resulted in the execution of the town's entire Jewish community, a fact the city's civic imagery carefully avoided.
Gebrüder Jänecke in Hannover were a well-established commercial press, handling Notgeld commissions for numerous municipalities during this period. The designer credit to J. Dominicus is uncommon — most issues of this type went uncredited.
