Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is printed in purple, green, and cream tones, with a decorative border of stylized wood-grain motifs and place names of the Lüneburg Heath region (including Soltau, Fallingbostel, Walsrode, Wolrode, and others) running along all four margins. The central vignette presents a schematic regional map of the Lüneburger Heide overlaid with a rearing white horse, a traditional symbol of Lower Saxony, with rail and road connections linking towns such as Hamburg, Hannover, Bremen, Lüneburg, and Uelzen. At lower left, a shepherd with a walking staff tends a flock of sheep amid heathland scenery, while at lower right stands a dense grove of junipers; at centre bottom, an oval medallion bears a portrait of writer Hermann Löns (1866–1914) framed by a heather wreath, flanked by the denomination numerals '70' in ornamental cartouches. Two stanzas of Low German verse appear in the upper left and upper right corners.

Opmerkingen

Lohengau is not a real place — it is a romanticized invented name drawn from Wagner's opera *Lohannsen*, or more precisely from the mythologized medieval geography favored by the German Heimatbewegung. The Heimatbund Lohengau was a regional patriotic association operating in the Soltau district of Lower Saxony, and the 70 Pfennig denomination places this squarely in the Notgeld inflation period, when local issuers routinely chose odd denominations to discourage hoarding and encourage rapid spending.

The Westholsteinische Bank's Soltau branch acted as guarantor and distributor, a common arrangement where cultural associations provided the artistic mandate and local banks provided financial credibility. Designer W. Kleinschmidt was almost certainly a local commercial artist rather than a professional engraver.
