Obverse description Draped bust of King João V facing right, rendered in high relief with elaborate period wig composed of flowing curls, occupying the majority of the obverse field. The circumferential Latin legend reads IOANNES. V. D. G. PORT. ET. ALG. REX., interrupted at the lower portion of the field by the Bahia mintmark 'B' and the date 1732 positioned beneath the truncation. The portrait is executed in the Baroque style characteristic of early eighteenth-century Portuguese colonial coinage, with fine detail in the drapery at the bust truncation. The entire design is enclosed within a toothed or reeded border.
