The Thai script, attributed to King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, is traditionally dated to 1283 — making 1983 the occasion for this issue. Whether Ramkhamhaeng personally devised the alphabet or codified an existing system remains a point of genuine scholarly dispute, but the 1283 inscription bearing his name is itself one of the most contested artifacts in Southeast Asian epigraphy, with some historians arguing it is a 19th-century fabrication commissioned under early Chakri dynasty nation-building.
