Beschrijving voorzijde Effigy of King Ramkhamhaeng the Great seated in three-quarter view to the left upon an ornately decorated throne or platform, rendered in high relief in a traditional Thai artistic style. The king is depicted wearing a crown and royal regalia, holding a manuscript or stone inscription tablet in both hands. To his left stands a tall Sukhothai-style chedi (stupa) with a tiered base, symbolizing the historic capital. A Thai legend curves around the upper portion of the field, and additional inscriptions appear along the lower border.

Aanvullende informatie

The Thai script, attributed to King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, is traditionally dated to 1283 — making 1983 the occasion for this issue. Whether Ramkhamhaeng personally devised the alphabet or codified an existing system remains a point of genuine scholarly dispute, but the 1283 inscription bearing his name is itself one of the most contested artifacts in Southeast Asian epigraphy, with some historians arguing it is a 19th-century fabrication commissioned under early Chakri dynasty nation-building.
