One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues from the postwar currency crisis, this 60 Heller note was produced by the market town of Windischgarsten in Upper Austria when the collapse of the Habsburg monetary system left municipalities scrambling to manufacture their own small-denomination scrip. The imperial krone had become functionally useless for everyday transactions by 1920, and local councils across Austria issued emergency paper in denominations that the national system could no longer supply in coin or reliable banknote form.
Windischgarsten's series is documented under the Jaksch cataloguing system, which remains the primary reference for Austrian municipal Notgeld.
