Waldkirchen am Wesen is a small market town in Upper Austria, and this 60 Heller note is a product of the Notgeld wave that swept Austrian municipalities in the postwar period — local governments printing their own emergency small change when coin circulation collapsed entirely after 1918. The signature of Anton Peham almost certainly represents the Bürgermeister at the time of issue, giving the note its local legal authority in the absence of any central backing.
60 Heller was an uncommon denomination, suggesting this was issued to fill a specific gap left by other circulating pieces rather than as part of a neat series.
