Nicaragua's Banco Central was established in 1960, replacing the earlier Banco Nacional which had handled central banking functions since 1912 under arrangements that gave significant operational influence to American financial interests — a legacy of the U.S. customs receivership that had governed Nicaraguan finances decades earlier. The 60th anniversary issue commemorates an institution whose early decades were shaped as much by Cold War politics and Somoza-era economic management as by orthodox central banking.
