Nicaragua's Banco Central was established in 1960, replacing the earlier Banco Nacional which had handled central banking functions since 1912 under arrangements that gave significant operational influence to American financial interests — a legacy of the U.S. customs receivership that had governed Nicaraguan finances decades earlier.
