The mandorla is surrounded by a field of eight-pointed stars arranged symmetrically. The circular legend SIT·T·XPE·DAT·Q·TV·REGIS·ISTE·DVCAT· runs around the entire periphery, a traditional Venetian ducal invocation translating as 'May this duchy which Thou rulest be dedicated to Thee, O Christ.' The overall composition closely follows the centuries-old Venetian zecchino design tradition. |
