A piedfort — a coin struck on a blank of double thickness using standard dies — served no monetary function. These were produced for presentation, for assay purposes, or for collectors of means, and Utrecht's output of such pieces in the 1680s reflects the province's active participation in that tradition among the Dutch provincial mints. The standard Rijderschelling had itself been a recurring type across multiple provinces, each jealously guarding its minting rights under the Union of Utrecht.
HPM attribution Ut 82.2 distinguishes this from related provincial piedforts; the KM#P40 designation confirms its non-circulating status.
