(Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek) appear prominently above the central device. The Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek's 1897 gold pattern sixpence was struck at a moment of acute political tension — just two years after the failed Jameson Raid had hardened Kruger's government against British interference and accelerated Pretoria's drive toward monetary self-sufficiency. Pattern pieces from the ZAR are notoriously difficult to attribute with precision; Hern's cataloguing remains the primary reference because so few archival mint records from Pretoria survived the Anglo-Boer War intact. The Republic ceased to exist as an issuing authority by 1900.
