South Africa's silver sixpence series under George VI ran from his coronation year through the final issues before the composition was debased — after 1947, the .800 silver was abandoned in favour of lower-grade alloy. The Pretoria Mint struck these throughout, one of the few Commonwealth mints with full production autonomy during the war years, which kept supply relatively stable even as British domestic coinage was severely disrupted.
The 1947 date is the last of the silver run and typically shows the highest circulation wear, having entered use just as post-war economic pressure peaked.
