| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, modelled by Mary Gillick, with a laurel wreath in her hair and a ribbon tied at the nape of the neck. The effigy is rendered in a refined, classical style characteristic of Gillick's early Elizabethan coinage portraits. The circular legend reads QUEEN·ELIZABETH·THE·SECOND, with the engraver's initials M·G· incorporated discreetly at the base of the bust. A raised beaded border encircles the entire design. |

| Reverse description | A Huia bird (Heteralocha acutirostris), an iconic and now-extinct New Zealand species, is depicted in right-facing profile perched on a branch, rendered in fine naturalistic detail by George Kruger Gray. The bird's distinctive long, curved bill, folded wings, and long tail feathers are faithfully captured in high relief. The legend NEW·ZEALAND arcs along the upper periphery, while SIXPENCE appears along the lower arc; the date is positioned to the right of the central device. The engraver's initials K·G appear below the branch. A beaded border runs around the inner edge of the coin. |
