Ernest August secured the Electoral dignity for Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1692 — the ninth Electorate of the Holy Roman Empire, and one extracted through years of costly political maneuvering and outright bribery of imperial officials. The 6 Mariengroschen issues of his final years were struck against that backdrop of legitimization, with Calenberg's mint working to project the authority of a newly elevated prince whose Electoral status remained bitterly contested by the existing Electors until after his death in 1698.
