| Opis awersu | Draped bust of Empress Maria Theresia facing right, her hair elaborately dressed and curled in the fashion of the period. The effigy is rendered in high relief with fine detail on the lace and drapery of the décolletage. The surrounding legend commences at approximately 8 o'clock and reads M THERESIA D G R IMP GE HU BO REG. The coin border features a dentilated inner rim characteristic of Habsburg milled coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. |

The Hall mint, operating in the Tyrolean town of Hall in Tirol, was one of the Habsburg dynasty's oldest and most productive silver-working facilities, having supplied coinage since the fifteenth century largely on the strength of nearby Schwaz silver deposits. By 1748, those deposits were long exhausted, and the mint was working imported metal — which partly explains the billon composition of this issue, a deliberate concession to silver scarcity rather than any debasement of intent.
Maria Theresia had been fighting the War of the Austrian Succession since 1740, and the fiscal strain on Habsburg finances was still acute even as the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was being negotiated that same year.
