Further Austria — the Habsburg's scattered southwestern territories centered on Freiburg im Breisgau — issued its own coinage with increasing difficulty as French Revolutionary armies pushed east through the Rhine valley in the 1790s. By 1796 French forces had occupied Freiburg itself, effectively ending local administration for stretches of the decade. That coins continued to be struck across this period at all reflects the administrative stubbornness of Vienna more than any stable economic reality on the ground.
