6 Ducats - Hiéronymus von Colloredo

Hieronymus von Colloredo was elected Archbishop of Salzburg in April 1772 in a contentious conclave that required multiple ballots — he was a reformist candidate backed by Vienna, and his election was immediately political. His administration became one of the most fiscally aggressive in Salzburg's history, and large multiple-ducat pieces like this six-ducat were struck as much for diplomatic gift-giving and court display as for any commercial function.

Colloredo is perhaps better remembered today as Mozart's employer and chief antagonist, dismissing him from service in 1781. The Zöttl references 3124 and 3126 indicate two distinct die combinations catalogued for this issue.
