Obverse description The obverse displays the elaborate quartered arms of the Electorate of the Palatinate within a crowned shield, featuring the lion of the Palatinate, the Bavarian lozenges, the Scepter of the Arch-Stewardship, and other dynastic quarterings of the Wittelsbach house. The crowned shield is flanked by additional heraldic devices and surrounded by a beaded inner border. The circular Latin legend reading IOHANN WILH D G C P R S R I A T & EL D B I C & M runs along the outer rim, identifying Elector John William by his full titles. The design is executed in a bold high-relief baroque style characteristic of late seventeenth and early eighteenth century German coinage.
