Birendra's coronation in February 1975 was a spectacle of deliberate anachronism — the ceremony drew on Vedic rituals largely unchanged since the Shah dynasty's founding in the 18th century, and the international press coverage was extensive enough that Nepal issued commemorative coins in multiple denominations and metals.
