Issued in the final years of the Polish People's Republic, this piece occupies an awkward political moment: a communist state producing a gold coin honoring the papacy of John Paul II, the very figure whose support for Solidarity had done more to destabilize that government than any domestic opposition. Hard currency and export earnings took precedence over ideological consistency — the Mint of Poland produced foreign-market bullion regardless of the subject's politics.
