| Obverse description | The Polish crowned eagle displayed without crown — the arms of the Polish People's Republic — occupies the central field, with wings spread and head turned to the right. The date 1988 is divided by the eagle's legs at centre, with '19' to the left and '88' to the right. The circular legend 'POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA' arcs along the upper periphery in Latin script. Issued in the final years of the Polish People's Republic, this piece occupies an awkward political moment: a communist state producing a gold coin honoring the papacy of John Paul II, the very figure whose support for Solidarity had done more to destabilize that government than any domestic opposition. Hard currency and export earnings took precedence over ideological consistency — the Mint of Poland produced foreign-market bullion regardless of the subject's politics.
The ParM and Fischer catalog references place this firmly within the collector-export series rather than any domestic circulation program.
