| Obverse description | At centre, the crowned Polish imperial eagle displayed with wings spread, rendered in high relief against a mirror-field proof finish. The date 1989 appears flanking the eagle's body, split to left and right. The denomination ZŁ 5000 ZŁ is inscribed in large characters in the lower field. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA arcs around the upper periphery in Latin characters, identifying the issuing state. |

Ladislaus II Jagiełło — king of Poland and Lithuania, victor at Grunwald in 1410 against the Teutonic Knights — was a recurring subject for Polish commemorative issues in the late communist period, when the state mint leaned heavily on medieval dynastic imagery to project continuity and national pride. This 1989 piece was struck in the final months before the Round Table Agreements fundamentally altered the political order, making it one of the last numismatic productions of the Polish People's Republic under that framework.
