The Tung Pei Bank of China was established in 1946 as the financial arm of the Chinese Communist administration in Manchuria — formally the Northeast (Tung Pei) region — following Soviet withdrawal and the resulting power vacuum. This note was issued during the civil war period when the Communists were consolidating control of the northeast ahead of their broader national campaign. Inflation in the region was severe, which drove denominations upward rapidly; 5000 Yuan issues like this reflect that pressure directly.
The bank was absorbed into the newly established People's Bank of China in 1948, making the entire series short-lived by design.
