The 1972 series marked the Bank of Korea's first significant step toward domestically produced high-denomination notes, reducing dependence on foreign security printers that had supplied Korean currency since the 1950s. The Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation had only recently developed the capacity to handle notes at this level, and early production runs showed minor registration inconsistencies that were corrected within the series.
