The 1972 series marked the Bank of Korea's first significant step toward domestically produced high-denomination notes, reducing dependence on foreign security printers that had supplied Korean currency since the 1950s. The Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation had only recently developed the capacity to handle notes at this level, and early production runs showed minor registration inconsistencies that were corrected within the series.
Watermarking is the sole mechanical security feature — a relatively sparse specification for the period, reflecting the facility's still-maturing capabilities at the time of issue.
