| Obverse description | The Somali national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a five-pointed star, supported on either side by a leopard rampant, the whole set upon a base of crossed palm fronds. The bilingual legend 'SOMALI REPUBLIC' in Latin script arcs along the upper rim, with the Arabic equivalent 'جمهورية الصومال' inscribed below it. The denomination '5000 Sh.So.' appears in the lower field, flanked by small Arabic numerals. |

Somalia's 1998 coinage program was, by this point, largely a fiction of statehood. The central government had collapsed in 1991, and coins issued under the Somali name through the late 1990s were produced entirely by foreign mints — primarily Austrian — for the collector market, with no meaningful connection to any functioning monetary authority in Mogadishu. The "Libertad" branding borrowed directly from Mexico's bullion series, a marketing decision by the issuing agent rather than any sovereign intent.
