The 5000 Markkaa denomination existed because Finnish inflation had made lower values nearly useless for serious transactions by the mid-1950s. Finland's postwar reparations to the Soviet Union — completed in 1952 — had drained industrial output and kept inflationary pressure high for years afterward, and the currency reflected it. A 5000 Markkaa note was not a prestige issue; it was a practical necessity.
The entire markka series was rendered obsolete by the 1963 redenomination, when the new markka replaced the old at 100:1. Most high-denomination notes from this period were returned and destroyed, which affects survival rates more than condition.
