| Description du revers | The coat of arms of Finland — the crowned lion rampant brandishing a sword, set upon a field strewn with nine roses — occupies a central heraldic shield rendered in intaglio, surrounded by an elaborate radiating guilloche pattern. The denomination numeral 5000 appears in large bold figures at each corner, with the Swedish-language legend and issuer name flanking the central vignette. The year 1955 is printed below the shield, and a fine ornamental border runs along the left edge. |

The 5000 Markkaa denomination existed because Finnish inflation had made lower values nearly useless for serious transactions by the mid-1950s. Finland's postwar reparations to the Soviet Union — completed in 1952 — had drained industrial output and kept inflationary pressure high for years afterward, and the currency reflected it. A 5000 Markkaa note was not a prestige issue; it was a practical necessity.
The entire markka series was rendered obsolete by the 1963 redenomination, when the new markka replaced the old at 100:1. Most high-denomination notes from this period were returned and destroyed, which affects survival rates more than condition.
