Leo XIV — born Robert Prevost of Chicago — was elected on May 8, 2025, becoming the first American-born pope in the history of the Catholic Church. Gabon's commemorative issues in this format are produced well in advance of distribution, which explains the 2026 date on a coin almost certainly struck within months of the conclave.
